How a northeastern deer hunter adopted the lightweight Sako 90 Finnlight bolt-action rifle in 7mm Rem Mag for a Western elk adventure.
As an upstate New York deer hunter, rifle weight is not always a main factor for me when searching for a new hunting rig. That said, I recently dropped off some Hook & Barrel magazines at my local gun shop, Quattro’s Hunting Supplies in Pleasant Valley. Owner Sal Quattrociocchi (say that 10 times fast) is a man whose opinion I value greatly, as he’s a veteran of countless Western big game rifle hunts in the highest of high country. The man knows his rifles, shotguns and handguns, as Quattro’s family-owned farm and hunting supplies store has been around since 1942.

I told Sal I was heading west in November to hunt elk in Montana, then asked him for some lightweight rifle recommendations. He was all about the latest Tikka models, and they all felt great in my hands. But then he said, “You could step things up a bit with the more premium Sako line of hunting rifles—specifically the Sako 90 series.”
Then I remembered a SHOT Show 2025 announcement that the Sako 90 Finnlight, launched globally in 2023, was coming to America in eight popular hunting calibers.
Successor to the Sako 85 Finnlight, the 90 Finnlight’s design attributes include lightweight durability (7.1 to 7.9 pounds), ergonomically friendly and adjustable. Set the Finnlight up to your liking, and all that’s left to do is focus on the hunt at hand.

With its adjustable, spring-loaded cheek piece to keep your head where it needs to be, the texturized composite stock (with synthetic leather material on grip and forend) gives the rifle an optimized fit and balance. If you’ve ever run the action on a Sako rifle, then you’ll know it is at the upper end of perfection. Match that with the machined-in Picatinny receiver interface for mounting glass, and you’ve got one crazy accurate hunting rig.
Finnlight rifles also feature fluted 20- to 24.5-inch (caliber dependent) CHF barrels with threaded muzzles, multi-adjustable—break like glass—Sako 90 triggers (2 to 4 pounds) and quick-detach sling sockets.
My Sako 90 Finnlight will be chambered in 7mm Rem. Mag., but U.S. customers have eight variants to choose from. MSRP is $2,099.
