The JAKL 9 from Palmetto State Armory is the latest in a long line of frankly incredible product launches from PSA. Featuring unflinching reliability, beautiful ergonomics, and a hard-hitting personality, the JAKL 9 is arguably the most efficient home defense tool on the market today.
Incorporating typical PSA quality and innovative design, the JAKL 9 offers a close-range capability not previously available at this price point. It is also simply great fun on the range.
What’s in a Name?

JAKL is an abbreviation of the term jackal, a species of canid native to Africa and Eurasia. Jackals are fast, capable of maintaining a speed of 10 mph for extended periods of time. They are also opportunistic omnivores that will eat pretty much anything they can catch.
Crepuscular animals, they are most active at dusk and dawn. Additionally, they are also monogamous, territorial creatures that will stake out both a mate and a space before defending both to the death. They are, in short, the ancestors of the modern loyal, dedicated guard dog.
Similarly, the PSA JAKL 9 is designed from the ground up for home and vehicular defense. Modern defensive weaponry fractionates into four broad categories.
Traditional handguns are the most common but the hardest to master. Shotguns excise all of the ambiguity out of a social exchange of ordnance. However, recoil is ferocious and reloads are a chore.

Modern sporting rifles are ubiquitous, but they’re long and bulky. They also throw zippy, powerful rifle rounds all over the place. The argument could be made that the ideal home defense weapon is the pistol-caliber submachine gun.
Of course, ill-informed activists along with a complicit media have successfully vilified the concept of the fully automatic weapon. The dirty little secret is that true professionals seldom if ever use the full auto function in a magazine-fed firearm. Additionally, forced reset triggers have thoroughly castrated those antiquated restrictions anyway.
That leaves a need for a compact, reliable semiautomatic firearm that fires a 9mm round from a decent-capacity magazine. This hypothetical defensive tool needs to be accurate, reliable, and versatile. The new PSA JAKL 9 is that very gun.

Particulars
The JAKL 9 is an evolutionary development of the 5.56 JAKL rifle. The rifle-caliber JAKL is sort of the arithmetic mean between an AR and an AK. Where the JAKL rifle orbits around the long-stroke, gas-operated, piston-driven action of the Kalashnikov, the JAKL 9 is straight unlocked blowback. Little is simpler.
The JAKL 9 is built around a 6105 aluminum monolithic upper receiver. This is the bit that carries the serial number. A modular design, everything else about the gun can be mixed and matched without tools. The front trunnion is cut from 8620 alloy steel, while the bolt carrier group is made from 17-4 stainless.
The buffer system on the JAKL 9 is fully enclosed within the receiver. This allows the addition of all manner of side-folding stocks and braces. PSA offers several factory options.

Our test gun came equipped with an F5 MFG JAKL Pistol brace. This brace, curiously enough, actually works as a pistol brace. The JAKL 9 is available in either black or FDE.
The 6.5-inch 4150V chrome moly steel barrel is rifled 1:10″ and nitride finished. It comes with an A2-style flash suppressor and is threaded 1/2×28 to allow easy addition of a sound suppressor.
The removable forearm sports plenty of M-LOK space, and the charging handle swaps easily to either side without tools. The gun charges up front in the manner of an MP5.
Accessorizing the JAKL 9

A gun this awesome demands some proper accessories. We started out with the superlative Trijicon MRO (Miniature Rifle Optic) and associated pivoting 3X magnifier. This is a basic indestructible red dot setup brought to you by the same great folks who helped the US military prevail throughout the Global War on Terror.
There really aren’t many bells and whistles, because you don’t need them. From across-the-room to out-a-ways, the MRO and magnifier optimize the capabilities of the JAKL 9.
You’re really not awesome these days if you don’t have something round and sinister hanging from the snout of your favorite gun. The SilencerCo Spectre 9 is custom-designed for this application.

Available in both standard and abbreviated Spectre 9K versions, the Spectre 9 is a compact, lightweight, all-titanium pistol-caliber sound suppressor that transforms the report of the host gun from a bang to a snap.
This makes all the difference should you ever be called upon to use this thing for real inside a building or a car. SilencerCo offers scads of mounting options. We just thread this one in place directly.
The Streamlight TLR-8G is a ruggedized combination white light and green laser that weighs about nothing and takes up very little space. Switch options are readily customized, and the thing runs off of a single standard CR123 battery you can find anyplace.
The addition of the TLR-8G makes the JAKL 9 into an all-weather, day-or-night tactical beast.

Practical Tactical
The ergonomics of the JAKL 9 are curiously innovative. A vertically sliding switch on the left aspect of the gun serves as a manual bolt lock. The bolt locks to the rear automatically on the last round fired. This lock will accomplish the same end for inspection.
Give the charging handle a quick snatch to drop the bolt over a fresh mag. You can thumb that slider down with your weak hand to accomplish the same end, though mine is a bit tight.
The rotating left-sided two-position safety is identical to that of an M4. The magazine release is a generous cool bilateral pivoting lever located on the front of the trigger guard. In this location is is easily accessed by either the thumb of the weak hand or the trigger finger.

It takes a little range time to acclimate to the fresh switchology, but everything runs both fast and well.
The trigger is the equal of any AR rifle. Recoil is snappier than you might expect, but this is the case with any direct blowback 9mm weapon regardless of geometry. PSA’s polymer magazines hold 15 or 30 rounds and are of the CZ Skorpion standard.
I think they are the smoothest, most easily-loaded SMG mags I have ever used. PSA will sell you these things all day long for $16.99 apiece. Wow.
Trigger Time with the JAKL 9

Oh, lordy, lordy, lordy. The tricked-out JAKL 9 will absolutely ruin you for bulky, heavy, loud guns. The 9mm chambering offers surgical accuracy and unparalleled maneuverability indoors.
The superlative ergonomics make it easy to run the piece both fast and well. Even with the sound suppressor in place, the JAKL 9 is still shorter and handier than a rifle-caliber carbine.
Keeping my rounds in a juice can lid when fired offhand at CQB ranges was child’s play. Follow up shots are smooth, straight, and intuitive. Magazine changes are as fast or faster than anything you have ever run. Recoil is sharp but easily manageable.

Your local gun emporium is riddled with self-defense firearms. Most of them are awesome. This one is perfect. If the brace offends you, wait until after Jan. 1, 2026, drop a BATF Form 1, and register the gun as a short-barreled rifle for free.
At that point you can slap any buttstock you wish onto an optional 1913 Picatinny rail mount. PSA sells those, too. The JAKL 9 is indeed the ultimate guard dog.
